This page traces the POLE family tree, showing descendants and connected families from Edward and Mary Pole of Buttlehay, also Buttle Hay, Buddlehay, Battle Hay, Battlehay etc., living about 1665 in the parish of Wiveliscombe in Somerset. The family later had connections in Milverton. Any details that you can add, especially corrections will be gratefully received.

| The following table is in sections by generation. The chart is read from left to right with the earliest generation at the left and the eldest children at the top. Numbered links to the next section are shown to the right if there are more descendants. The numbers themselves have no significance, other than their position in the entire Stone family tree. At the top of each section to the left is a numbered link to the earlier generations, where applicable. | |
Many of the earlier dates come from Quaker records. At that time the Quakers did not use month names, but used expressions such as 'fourth month'. Before 1752 when the calendar changed, it is not clear from my source whether dates are 'old' or 'new' style i.e. was January month 10 or month 1 respectively. I have used Roman numerals for month numbers to indicate this uncertainty. |

| * The Wiveliscombe parish register for this period is in poor condition and the microfilm virtually unreadable. The following entries were found in Wiveliscombe Parish Register 10-11-1999 by GTS. These are to be rechecked and if possible the original examined. |

| Edward Sonn of Edward Pole? |
2 or 22? March 1665/6 |
| William son of Edward Pole |

| John son of Edward [Pole?] |
3 April ? 1671 Fiche too faded |
| Ann daugh of Edward Poll [or Pole?] |
16 February 1671/2 [Remember that the year ended in March.] |
|
| |
With three children of the correct name, (left hand column of chart), it is quite likely that this is the same Edward as the one at the top of the page. So he probably married Mary 1660-62 and was born 1630-1640. Also need to check for burials of the first John and William.
This is earlier than Thomas Pole MD suggests - i.e. "Edward born 1670 and died 1712 aged about 42".
Also he says that Edward and Ann were born at Battlehay, but this could be an assumption.
Thomas also suggests that Edward snr. built Battlehay about 1665, so where did they live before that and how did they afford it?
